BEST ROBOT VACUUM AND MOP COMBO FOR HARDWOOD FLOORS

Ecovacs DEEBOT T20 Omni Robot Vacuum and Mop, $1799, Amazon Australia

Tried and Tested by Shopping Writer Tahnee-Jae Lopez-Vito

Ecovacs’ latest release is an all-rounder. And while this model could top many of our lists, such as best self-emptying robot vac, best robot vacuum and mop combo for pets, or best robot cleaner for tile floors, the DEEBOT T20 Omni seriously impressed when it came to hardwood floors.

Hardwood floors and laminate floors aren’t always the easiest to mop, with dried streaks or a wet finish being common frustrations among many shoppers. But this model left our floors looking cleaner and shinier, easily achieving a better result than when it’s mopped by hand.

Some standout features include new auto-lifting mop pads, and both hot mop washing and hot air drying capabilities. You can also expect a strong 6000Pa suction power, quiet operation, and a wide variety of customisable settings.

For anyone who is yet to transition to a robot vacuum, this model offers a great runtime that exceeds way past what many stick vacuums offer. This promises a runtime of 170-260 minutes, which is more than double compared to what many traditional vacs provide.

Nicknamed Optimus Grime, this robot vac constantly got stuck on rugs and chairs during its initial training wheel phase. But its mapping improved over several runs and I no longer need to step in. Don’t get me wrong, the robot drives like a bumper car running late to a meeting, but it’s super impressive to see it tilt to wipe edges and achieve a thorough clean overall.

WHAT MAINTENANCE TASKS, SUCH AS EMPTYING THE DUSTBIN OR CLEANING THE BRUSHES, ARE REQUIRED FOR A ROBOT VACUUM AND MOP?

Taking care of your robot cleaner is the number one way to get the best bang for buck, making sure the appliance works as efficiently as it can, for as long as possible. These are a few habits to keep in mind when using your vacuum and mop combo.

Tidy the space

While robot vacuum and mops are designed to detect and avoid objects, they’re not perfect. so, it’s important to prepare the area by removing objects the robot cleaner could get stuck on. This includes power cords, clothes, toys, slippers, fabrics that hit the floor (e.g. curtains and quilt cover) and any other small or loose items.

Clean the sensors

The sensors are pretty much the ‘eyes’ of your robot cleaner. Give these a gentle wipe with a dry cloth to ensure the gadget can continue to efficiently navigate and avoid obstacles.

If your robot vacuum and mop is having trouble returning to its docking station, there’s a good chance the sensors are a little dirty.

Clean the filters

Many robot vacuum and mop combos come with washable filters, allowing you to rinse them under cold water after gently removing any hair and other debris. Let them fully air dry before reattaching them to the machine. If the filters aren’t washable, you can’t just skip this step and simply pick out any loose dirt.

Clean the mop pads

Depending on your specific model, you can throw mopping pads in the washing machine (without fabric softener) or hand wash them using warm water and detergent. Some units come with a self-cleaning functionality that washes and dries the pads, as well as auto empties the dustbin after every clean.

If the pads are particularly dirty, you can soak them in warm water beforehand to loosen any grime.

Clean the wheels

Similar to brushes, wheels build up a decent amount of dust and debris that can eventually limit how well the robot vacuum moves. That’s why it’s important to run a toothbrush, soft-bristled brush or the supplied cleaning brush over the wheels regularly. You can also grab your stick vac and use the crevice brush to reach into tight, hard to reach spaces.

CAN A ROBOT VACUUM AND MOP BE USED IN MULTI-LEVEL HOMES?

Yes – most robotic vacuum and mop combos can save at least two maps, so you can definitely use robot cleaners in multi-level homes. They can also be used in apartments or houses that have steps (rather than a staircase) that separate different areas. Plus, many models are designed to detect and avoid falling down stairs.

IS IT SAFE TO LEAVE A ROBOT VACUUM AND MOP UNATTENDED?

It’s perfectly safe to leave your robot vacuum and mop alone, which is why most apps allow you to schedule and control the appliance remotely. If you don’t want it to enter a certain area, you can create no-go zones that essentially create a virtual wall in the robot’s clever mapping system. The gadget can be programmed to avoid the space each time it runs or when needed. Many models also let you customise the settings so the appliance creates barrier whenever it runs vacuum-only mode but not mopping (and vice versa).

HOW LOUD IS A ROBOT VACUUM AND MOP DURING OPERATION?

Most robot vacuum cleaners work between 70 and 80 dB, which is similar to the ambience of a noisy restaurant.

Specs typically show the maximum noise level, which generally refers to how loud the robot cleaner runs when operating at its most powerful (e.g. deep clean). Some models like the Ecovacs DEEBOT T20 Omni offer a quiet mode that will reduce the suction power, allowing you to nap or entertain guests while the robot vac does its thing.
